what do you mean, to upgrade?
If it's adding a different soundtrack, I am sure metallifraek27 could help you as he is often synching DVDs and if you want to author DVDs, I use Ulead Workshop...at first it seems complicated but it's quite usefull and has great results.

i am wanting to try and clear up some grainy footage and i have seen on sites that they claim upgraded versions and i only thought that meant a better copy.

you can only "upgrade" the dvd video footage with a better source/gen

if u have a gen2 show, obviously the gen1 or master will be a nice upgrade

i have never heard of anyone really being able to improve video quality

You can't improve a picture from a DVD. The picture quality has to do with the master media and quality of the tranfer. All you can do is to get a lowest dvdr() generation but picture quality will remain the same.
